Cancer Genetics

The Cancer Genetics Clinic provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, testing, education and counseling for those considered at risk because of a hereditary predisposition to cancer.

Our genetic counselors assist individuals and families in understanding diagnosis, treatment and management of a genetic disorder. They educate candidates on their particular risk for cancer by reviewing family and personal history as well as discussing emotional, psychological and medical implications of proceeding with any testing.

Who Should Consider Testing

Individuals most likely to benefit from genetic counseling include those with cancer onset at an early age, cancers occurring in multiple generations of family, and clustering of the same type of cancer in close relatives.

A hereditary gene mutation most often occurs in cancers of the breast, uterus, prostate, ovaries and colon. However, individuals with any personal or family histories of cancer also may benefit from genetic counseling.
