Treatment Technology

Brachytherapy is a treatment technique that allows a physician to place radioactive isotopes through modern imaging guidance at the site of the tumor, allowing for an increase in the amount of radiation to the tumor with a decrease in dose to the surrounding normal tissues. Disease-sites where this therapy is commonly used includes:

Gamma Knife

The Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion is the latest version of a revolutionary tool used to destroy brain tumors and blood vessel abnormalities that are inaccessible or otherwise unsuitable for traditional open-skull surgery.

The latest advances with this device further automate a powerful unit that can perform “surgery” on critical locations of the brain without surgical risk, a long hospital stay, or a single incision. The ease of transitioning through the phases of treatment allows for significantly abbreviated treatment compared to older models of this device which increases patient comfort and adaptability for the physicians planning.

Linear Accelerator

The Trilogy® Stereotactic System from Varian® Medical Systems is the most advanced, sophisticated machine of its type in the world. Access to this leading-edge technology offers a new level of patient care. The Trilogy gives maximum radiation treatment to the tumor while greatly reducing the radiation delivered to the surrounding normal tissues.

The Trilogy is equipped with an imaging system that gives your doctor 2-D and 3-D views that allows him/her to precisely locate and target your tumor.

In addition, the system uses computers and movable leaves to create a radiation beam that matches the shape of your tumor from any angle. This reduces the damage to the normal, healthy tissue that surrounds the tumor.

Another advanced feature of the Trilogy known as "respiratory gating," lets it adjust for movement of a tumor cause by your breathing. All these techniques can be customized for each patient, allowing your doctor to treat almost any type and size of tumor anywhere in your body, including your brain.

Total Body Irradiation

Total Body Irradiation (TBI) is a radiotherapy technique used to ablate the bone marrow and immune system prior to bone marrow transplantation or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. It may be used as part of high-dose treatment of some leukemia and lymphomas. The aim of this type of ablative therapy is to prevent rejection of the transplanted cells.
